Yoga Therapy Session
Many people are now aware of the health benefits that a regular yoga practice can bring about, but it is less well known that yoga can be used to assist in specific health or lifestyle issues.
In a Yoga Therapy session, we select specific yoga techniques, like yoga poses, breathing practices, relaxation exercises and meditation, as well as dietary and lifestyle advice, to help people with almost any health condition, be it physical or even psychological.
Richard will perform a detailed, holistic evaluation of your current state—assessing physical, energetic, mental, spiritual and environmental aspects of your life—and then create a personalised yoga plan.
Yoga therapy is very effective on its own or in conjunction with any conventional or alternative medical treatment.
It is important to understand that yoga practices require consistency in order to be effective. If you are prepared to implement these recommendations in to your life, you will surely see the difference in a short amount of time. If however you are not prepared to do the practice consistently, it may not be the best choice for you.
A yoga therapy session will typically be divided into 4 phases...
1. Holistic Evaluation.
This can be done in person in Auckland, NZ, or from anywhere in the world with an internet connection via a Skype call. This evaluation usually takes somewhere between 60-90 mins. During this phase of the yoga therapy consultation I will get to know all about you, your lifestyle, and any issues you may have going on in your life. We use yoga philosophy to help us ascertain a complex understanding of your situation.
A Yoga Therapy consultation will evaluate your health and wellbeing taking in to consideration:
- Chakras (energy/aspects of consciousness)
- Koshas (gross through to subtle aspects of the self)
- Agni (digestive capacity)
- Gunas (Lifestyle habits and tendencies)
- Dosha (constitution)
- Swara (breath analysis)
- Diet
- Lifestyle
- Body Mechanics
- Injuries
After a complete consultation, Richard might offer one or two techniques for you to immediately start incorporating into your lifestyle.
2. Analysis
During the second phase, over the next few days, Richard analyses and asses all of the information he has gained and begins to devise a yoga therapy routine. As mentioned above, this generally consists of yoga poses, breathing practices, relaxation exercises and meditation, as well as dietary and lifestyle advice. This will be typed up and given as an easy to follow PDF file with clear instructions, and pictures.
3. Teaching of techniques
In the third phase, you will meet again with Richard, either in person or over Skype. He will clearly guide you through each technique or practice, making sure that you are confident and comfortable with each aspect. If there are any problems here (due to injury, mobility, etc) your plan will be revised and modified to make the practice more suitable. After this it is up to you to go away and sincerely practice the exercises each day.
4. Review
In 1 months time you will catch up again (if you like) and review how it has been going, and discuss improvements, obstacles etc. This would be the formal end of your yoga session, but you are welcome to continue with more follow up sessions, or a new yoga therapy session as it suits.
